In only a few years, Daniel Müller-Schott has succeeded in establishing himself on the world’s important concert stages, fascinating audiences with his technical brilliance and authority which are coupled with great intellectual and emotional spirit. It is especially important for him to discover unknown works and to extend his repertoire on the cello, for example through his own transcriptions, in particular to work closely with composers and to perform the music of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Daniel Müller-Schott studied under Walter Nothas, Heinrich Schiff and Steven Isserlis. He has benefited from the personal sponsorship and support of Anne-Sophie Mutter as the holder of a scholarship from her Foundation. In 1992, at the age of fifteen, he first caused a sensation internationally by winning the 1st Prize at the Moscow International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians.

Since then he has appeared in concert all over the world with such renowned conductors as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Andrew Davis, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Michael Gielen, Alan Gilbert, Bernard Haitink, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Dmitrij Kitajenko, Gianandrea Noseda, Yakov Kreizberg, Kurt Masur, Sakari Oramo and André Previn. The cellist works with such leading international orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, the Baltimore, Boston and Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and Hamburg, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre Philharmonic de Monte Carlo, Netherland Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, as well the New Japan Philharmonic and the Spanish National Orchestra.

In the summer of 2009, Daniel Müller-Schott is again performing at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival with the orchestra of the same name under Lawrence Foster. He has particularly close ties with the Festival Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – last year as “Prize-winner in Residence” with twelve different programmes from baroque to contemporary. This year he is lecturing at the summer campus where he will not only be teaching a master class of promising young cellists, but will also be performing as a soloist on three evenings with Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major, in a duo programme with works by Britten and Brahms and in a night concert with Bach’s third Cello Suite.

In the 2009/10 season, Daniel Müller-Schott can be heard playing Saint-Saëns’ first Cello Concerto under Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in Germany, Austria and Turkey. A second tour with the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra under Mikhail Agrest will take the cellist around Spain where he will play Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Together with Viviane Hagner and Jonathan Gilad, Daniel Müller-Schott will be embarking on a first trio tour in May 2010 with concerts in Hamburg, Munich and St. Gallen and at the Schubertiade in Hohenems. A second trio tour is already scheduled for the following season with concerts in Germany and Brussels. Further highlights are his debut with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington under Jakub Hrusa and concerts with the MDR Symphony Orchestra under Jun Märkl with the Dvořák Cello Concerto, among other in Prague. Daniel Müller-Schott will be the guest performer with Elgar’s Cello Concerto in Mexico with the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de México under Carlos Miguel Prieto and with the same work accompanied by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra under Yakov Kreizberg. Cooperation with Yakov Kreizberg, then with the Orchestra Philharmonic de Monte-Carlo, is resumed at the Kissinger Summer and the Rheingau Music Festival. Daniel Müller-Schott will be playing the Brahms Double Concerto with both Arabella Steinbacher under Stefan Blunier with the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn and Henning Kraggerud and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra under Vassily Sinaisky. He will be working for the first time with Thomas Dausgard and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and with Dennis Russel-Davis and the Basel Symphony Orchestra. In the United Kingdom the cellist will be guest performer with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic under Lothar Zagrosek, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Alexander Lazarev and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under Kirill Karabits. The Festival Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has engaged Daniel Müller-Schott for three orchestra concerts in 2010.

Additionally, Müller-Schott will be performing in recitals, solo evenings and trio concerts at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, the Musikhalle Hamburg, the Philharmonie München, the Salzburg Mozarteum, London's Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, for the Vancouver Recital Society and in Zürich's Tonhalle. His chamber music partners include Nicolas Angelich, Jonathan Biss, Renaud Capuçon, Julia Fischer, Jonathan Gilad, Viviane Hagner, Angela Hewitt, Daniel Hope, Steven Isserlis, Robert Kulek, Olli Mustonen, Anne-Sophie Mutter, André Previn and Jean-Yves Thibaudet as well the Fauré Quartet, the Quatuor Ebène, and the Vogler Quartet.

Daniel Müller-Schott is a regular guest at international festivals of music, for example in Salzburg, Lucerne, Schleswig-Holstein, Rheingau, Schwetzingen and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, at the City of London Festival, the Festival of Chamber Music Vancouver and in the USA at festivals, for example in Ravinia, Saratoga, Tanglewood and in Aspen.

Daniel Müller-Schrott has a keen interest in awakening young people’s enthusiasm for music and introducing them to the magical moments of music. He is therefore supporting the Rhapsody in School project in an honorary capacity – this year he will be visiting a German school in Madrid. Daniel Müller-Schott also demonstrates his wholehearted commitment to music in his master classes to which he is invited in Germany and particularly in the USA.

Since his childhood, Daniel Müller-Schott has felt a great love for the music by Johann Sebastian Bach. Consequently, it is hardly surprising that when he came to record his first CD, he chose the Six Suites for Cello Solo in Bach’s jubilee 2000 (Glissando Records).

Daniel Müller-Schott has already built up a sizeable discography under the ORFEO, Deutsche Grammophon, Pentatone and EMI Classics labels. He has a close working relationship with ORFEO. His recordings have been enthusiastically received by both the public and the press and have also received numerous awards, including the Gramophone Editor’s Choice, Strad Selection, and the BBC Music Magazine’s “CD of the month”. He has been awarded the Quarterly Prize of German Record Critics for his recordings of the Elgar and Walton Cello Concertos and for his most recent CD of the Shostakovich Cello Concertos recorded with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra under Yakov Kreizberg.


A new ORFEO recording of the Schumann and Volkmann Cello Concertos, produced with the NDR Symphony Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach, is coming out in September 2009. The second part of the Beethoven cycle with Angela Hewitt will be released by Hyperion in November 2009 and the Mendelssohn sonatas with Jonathan Gilad are scheduled for spring 2010 with ORFEO.

Daniel Müller-Schott currently lives in his home town of Munich. In his leisure time he is a keen jogger and soccer player. He has also developed a considerable affinity for the fine arts, in particular for French paintings of the 19th century. Both colour and light constantly fascinate and inspire him. Under a commission from the Festival Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the cellist himself was portraited by the Dresden artist Ekkehard Tischendorf.
